The Gokai, or Reiki Precepts, are the heart of Mikao Usui’s teaching. Simple yet profound, they were originally chanted morning and evening as a way to harmonize body, mind, and spirit. Usui himself encouraged his students to live by them, not only as healers but as human beings walking a path of kindness, clarity, and balance.

This calligraphy artwork offers the Gokai in English, painted with brush and ink in a meditative flow. The 3rd precept can be translated as 'Be grateful' or 'Be humble'. When painting insights come through the brush, and I realised that to be grateful we need to be humble first. It can be used as a focus in daily Reiki practice, a reminder for Reiki Teachers and attuned students, or simply as a set of universal guidelines for living with more presence and compassion.

Let these words be a gentle companion in your practice, anchoring the spirit of Reiki into your everyday life.

I have this framed in my healing space and use it both, in daily meditation practice and before a Reiki treatment. I chant it in Japanese and will soon paint the Kogai in Japanese Kanji.
